Looking to the Future
Newsletter: Volume1, Issue 1 - April 2004
Although
conservation and sustainable natural resource utilization are
Forest Partners International's ultimate goal, we also recognize
a responsibility to working with the rural poor who have such
an influence on the future of wildlife and forests. In addition
to working with our rural partners to conduct wildlife research
and monitoring, we will also work with communities to improve
their lives as well.
Given the nutritional and economic dependency of rural people
on wildlife in Liberia, we will work to find alternative protein
sources and other means of income generation. Furthermore, in
consultation with rural communities, FPI plans to promote improved
health care through "Where there is no Doctor" and "Visiting Doctor"
programs. Improved education is also a key step in combating rural
poverty, and FPI will assist rural schools, provide scholarships,
and work with university partners to enhance their capacities
to meet the challenges ahead.
