Tropical forests cover less than 7% of the Earth's land surface, house more than half of the world's species, and are rapidly disappearing. There are also more than 240 million rural people who live in or near tropical forests. Many of the world's poorest people depend on forests, wholly or in part, for their sustenance and livelihoods. Tropical forest protection depends on the support of rural peoples.
